Finance Director, Germany (0203)

The Role

ED&F Man has an opportunity for an experienced and highly qualified Finance Director, to join a world leading trader of agricultural commodities within our Coffee Trading Division.

The successful candidate is responsible for the management and administration of the Gollücke & Rothfos trading entity in Bremen, Germany.  This is a key role to our organisation, reporting to the European Regional Financial Controller and acting as partner to the local General Manager. The Finance Director will directly oversee a team of two in Bremen.


Duties will include, but are not limited to:

Budget Preparation and Financial Reporting

  • Prepare budgets and forecasts in line with required timelines, guidelines and expectations; and ensure correctness of assumptions. 

Month-end Financial Reporting

  • Manage and coordinate the month end process from an accounting and reporting point of view (flash submission/PnL and BS analysis/ commentaries and reports/Hyperion submission).

Year-end Financial Reporting

  • Manage Year End reporting (Detailed review of Fair Value calculation).

Risk Management

  • Monitor stock levels and net position and anticipate potential breach of limits;
  • Understand major risks at any point in time and report them to the Regional controller.


  • Prepare weekly cash forecast, monitor cash usage levels and anticipate any potential breach of limits.
  • Manage cash-flow and coordinate forex hedging activities.
  • Manage relationship/communication with local banks and central treasury.
  • Manage the process of setting up new banking products, services, corporate guarantees and new potential credit lines.

Internal Audit

  • Ensure a solid control environment is in place, by implementing and supervising the group minimum control standards framework, embracing a continuous improvement approach.
  • Follow group policies and make sure they are correctly implemented.

 External Audit

  • Provide timely support to the external audit team (coordinate and prepare required documentation, provide clear explanations and feedback)

Capex Preparation and Sign-off

  • Prepare Capex calculation and documentation in line with the group Policy.
  • Review and monitor the actual progress of Capex approved.


  • Manage local tax periodic calculation and submission.
  • Prepare annual Transfer Pricing document.
  • Provide support to local authorities in case of Tax Audit (coordinate and prepare required documentation, provide clear explanations and feedback) 

Business partnering

  • Act as a business partner to the general manager and the regional financial controller and provide meaningful analytics to drive through change, such as effective and lean overhead management.
  • Develop a consistent and comprehensive set of standards and reports, while improving financial and commercial support services to the business.
  • Provide advice, coaching and guidance to a team of two finance employees.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting/economics and qualified accountant qualification preferred (RA/CPA or similar).
  • Previous relevant work experience in a similar role in an international context is essential.
  • Proven understanding of accounting and related technical areas such as Treasury, Tax and Risk.
  • Understanding of physical commodity trading and its impact on financial reporting.
  • Ability to demonstrate commercial awareness and strong understanding of the importance of the core finance on the commercial functions.
  • Specific knowledge of financial reporting systems and accounting rules (IFRS and local GAAP) and legislation.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively build strong working relationships across different functions and cultures and provide them with constant support.
  • Strong focus on performance; sets high standards, results orientated and able to maintain performance under pressure.
  • Experience of managing a small team desired
  • Willingness and ability to attend short overseas business trips as required
  • Flexible attitude and keen to take on new challenges.
  • Fluency in business English and German is mandatory.
