The Role

A new and exciting opportunity has arisen within ED&F Man for a Data Scientist or Quantitative Analyst to support risk and research teams in London.

The successful candidate will form part of a fundamental research team responsible for analysing proprietary and external data to support ED&F Man’s sugar and coffee trading teams. Working with teams in London, Switzerland, Brazil, India, Singapore, Colombia, Vietnam and US, the candidate will benefit from the department’s global reach.

ED&F Man has been a market leader in commodity trading and logistical solutions for many years.  This role will concentrate on systemising data to aid trading decisions and help with commercial business strategies.


Duties to include, but are not limited to:

  • Build tools and trading strategies relating to fundamental and non-fundamental influences on commodity markets, using advanced quantitative skills.
  • Conduct research and statistical analyses in the evaluation of in-house database of price, shipments, weather, macro and supply/demand data.
  • Work with large data sets, including unconventional data sources, Bloomberg and Reuters feeds, to predict and test statistical market patterns
  • Develop high-quality models, algorithms and tools facilitating the pricing, risk-management and valuation of the coffee/sugar futures trading portfolio
  • Monitoring and assessing key market drivers and new data sources in order to develop insightful analysis of the global sugar and coffee market.
  • Use statistical tools to analyse and interpret developments in physical and futures markets, periodically back-testing strategies/signals and ensemble systems
  • Based on the results, generate timely and ad-hoc updates to the trading teams to strengthen the commercial decision making processes and direct business strategies.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Advanced training in mathematics, statistics, physics, computer science, or another highly quantitative field
  • Proficiency in probability & statistics (e.g. time-series analysis, machine learning, pattern recognition, NLP)
  • Prior experience working in a data driven research environment in a similar quantitative role.
  • Hands on programming experience in scripting (e.g. Python), analytical packages (e.g. R, Matlab) and/or compiled languages (e.g. C++)
  • A background demonstrating strong analytical problem solving skills
  • An ability to communicate advanced concepts in a concise and logical way
  • Proficiency in creating and using algorithms to meticulously investigate and work through large data or error-checking problems.
  • Want to engage in daily front-office business support, especially but not exclusively in regard to the models, tools and applications owned and maintained by the team
  • Be team-oriented and communicative, yet also be able to do structured and self-organized project work with well-defined deliveries

Our daily, weekly and monthly reports cover a range of issues including demand analysis, pricing, trade flows, consumption forecasts, geopolitical issues, regulation, climate change and regional updates.
