Head of Sugar Research (0163)

The Role 

A new and exciting opportunity has arisen within ED&F Man to lead our global sugar research desk.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ED&F Man’s global Sugar research team that analyses proprietary data to support our physical sugar trading teams. Leading our specialist research teams in London, Brazil, India, Singapore and US, the candidate will guide and drive the department’s global Sugar views.

ED&F Man has been a market leader in commodity trading and logistical solutions for many years. This role will concentrate on providing crucial information to the business about strategic market developments in the industry, and on producing creative ideas and solutions linked to the changing Global sugar trading environment.

  • Managing the sugar research team globally, collecting and coordinating each analyst’s work into a central view, motivating them and guiding them towards best practise in sugar research
  • Overall responsibility for maintaining and developing our in-house database of price, shipments, weather and crop data to come up with our “house view”.
  • Producing regular written reports for internal and external publications.
  • Monitoring and assessing key market drivers and new developments in order to develop insightful analysis of the global sugar market
  • Generating timely and adhoc updates to the trading teams to strengthen the commercial position of the business
  • Help maintain global and regional supply/demand models, price models and trade balances
  • Strong analysis and interpretation of developments in physical and futures markets, weather, regulatory and trading environment
  • Proactive approach in supporting the traders and other stakeholders in their market analysis needs and requests.

Skills & Qualifications 

  • 10 years + working in Agricultural and softs research; highly numerate, with excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey facts and ideas clearly. Organised with attention to detail and goal-oriented
  • Specialist knowledge in sugar research, not just with regional expertise, but also globally, with proven ability to build a good rapport with traders to share trading recommendations and support
  • Proven ability to manage research staff, with a strong track record in enthusiasm for generating research conclusions from information gathered by team or self, or external resources.
  • Strong communication skills, both in terms of written reports to present key findings, and verbal/powerpoint to convey fundamentals-driven (and increasingly non-fundamentals) trade recommendations.
  • Strong database and excel skills as the role requires manipulating data in an efficient manner, while deriving strategic conclusions to aid commercial decision-making.
  • Msc in Economics related degree, with strong background in forecasting skills.

Who We Are

Established in 1783, ED&F Man is an employee-owned agricultural commodities merchant with 7,000 people in 60 countries and annual revenue in excess of $10bn.  We trade sugar, coffee, molasses, animal feed, grains and pulses. We help our counterparties manage price risk through hedging and provide access to commodity and capital markets through our brokerage business.

We source or process raw, white and specialty sugars from over 40 producing countries. We sell to refineries, industrial users, wholesalers, retailers and consumers, offering local solutions though a  number of in-country purchasing, sales and distribution businesses. We have also invested in a food technology company to launch a stevia sweetener with the flavour and mouth feel of sugar.

As a founding member of Bonsucro, all our processing operations and trading hubs have the highest sustainability credentials and we play an active role in developing the sustainability agenda.
