Junior Risk Analyst - Commodities (0115)

The Role

We are looking for a Junior Risk Analyst to join our commodities division.   The role will provide the opportunity to be involved in a variety of risk control activities, working within the Group Risk team. In this position, you’ll have a unique opportunity for extensive exposure to senior management, through the reports and analytics you provide.

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual to develop a career in risk management with further specialisation, and will suit someone analytical, proactive and with a ‘can do’ attitude.


The main focus of the role will be on credit risk but responsibilities will cover a broad spectrum of risk management including:


  • Review of counterparty transactions and limit requests, including credit review and working with trading departments on transactional and counterparty specific issues
  • Review country limit proposals and provide feedback and assistance to sponsors in preparation of these proposals
  • Contribute to detailed counterparty analysis and add value to current review process
  • Preparation of weekly and monthly exposure reports
  • Administration of credit risk management system (CPRS), providing global support to users


  • Preparation of position and P&L reports for the Commodities Trading desk’s books on a daily, weekly and monthly basis
  • Risk measurement and limit checking, including validation of input parameters of used risk models
  • Administration of market risk management system, providing global support to users and ensuring data integrity
  • Assistance in the identification and implementation of improvements to the market risk processes and systems


  • Identification and follow up of issues of non-compliance with limits
  • Preparation and submission of the risk
  • reports and associated presentations to senior management.
  • Assist and support the monthly Risk Committee, including preparation of reports for the meetings
  • Involvement in ad hoc projects

 Skills & Qualifications

The ideal applicant will have relevant experience within the risk function of a commodities house, an energy company, bank or hedge fund and be able to demonstrate: 

  • Financial awareness, high levels of numeracy, with excellent academic record
  • An awareness of credit rating methodologies and how to appraise counterparties accordingly
  • Counterparty/credit risk knowledge - experience in developing and establishing controls and procedures within a trading group would be advantageous
  • Knowledge and experience of the commodity markets for both exchange listed products and OTC derivatives (Swaps, Options) and ideally some exposure to structured products/exotic options
  • The ability to work within a team towards shared team objectives is key
  • Highly developed inter-personal skills, sensitivity to local cultural differences and the ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and have a flexible approach to change
  • Can work independently and display a willingness to learn with an entrepreneurial approach to help offer solutions to issues that arise
  • An ability to take initiative, roll up your sleeves and have a “hands-on” approach
  • A strong work ethic, the ability to work to tight deadlines, and be able to deal with competing priorities
  • Good general IT skills, particularly the use of Excel and the ability to understand system workflow logic and methodology
  • Language skills preferred

We help our counterparties manage price risk through hedging and provide access to commodity and capital markets through our brokerage business.

ED&F Man is a pioneer as well as a trader in liquid agricultural by-and- co-products. We offer expertise in animal nutrition and feed dispense technology to farmers. We work closely with manufacturers, such as rum and yeast producers, to provide quality products from sustainable sources.

Our capability includes sourcing, shipping, storage and distribution of molasses, molasses

blends and other sugar co-products, as well as vegetable and fish oils. Using the sourcing skill of our trading division and the blending and inventory management know-how of our storage operations, we tailor make sophisticated blends to match our customers’ needs.
